“Smart” Meters

All Victorian electricity meters will be “upgraded” to the new “Smart” meter in the next few years. The main concept behind the meter is that the consumers will know exactly how much and when they are using electricity so they can use less and therefore save money and greenhouse emissions. This sounds good in theory however, to take advantage of this information, one would virtually have to run outside, read the meter, run back in, turn on your appliance, and run back out to see how much electricity it is using. So the whole concept is not useful to the householder, only really to the electricity company who can then monitor your peak periods and then maybe use this information for scheduling fees. A very “smart” meter for the electricity company indeed. The Problems

The “Smart” meters use wireless technology that produces Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation to pass information back to the power companies. The exposure received from this is involuntary and continuous. The radiation also moves in and through you and travels up to 2.5km! This means each person is not only exposed to their own meter, but also everyone else’s within this range. The safety guidelines that they fall within are also extremely questionable for protecting the population’s health. In America, after the installation of “Smart” meters, there has been a range of complaints reported. These concerns included headaches, poor sleep and heart palpitations. Independent research has also reported other major health issues from exposure to this radiation including impaired cellular communication through to DNA breakages and it seems children, the elderly and frail are particularly susceptible. The meters can also create dirty electricity on a building’s wiring systems to further exacerbate the hazard.
